Rick’s Letter
The overall experience was absolutely amazing! As you already know Alex and I harvested two incredible Rams and two Javalina but this was only part of the experience. The overall experience was comprised of many related parts which I will attempt to describe.
The Information/Reservation Process:This process started in January of 2019 when I talked with John. He sent me a large packet of information including Pat King as a reference. I talked with Pat and after the positive discussion I had with him we made our initial reservation in February of 2019 for a September hunt in 2020. (We already had a hunting trip planned for September of 2019). Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 Virus we elected to cancel our 2020 Marfa trip. Allisan was great to work with and applied our reservation deposit to our recently completed hunt and used the original rate structure to access our remaining balance. That is Texas hospitality! I had several discussion with Brandt Buchanan, Ranch Manager, regarding the Ranch and the hunt. He was extremely helpful and made the trip preparation seamless.
The Game/Wildlife:When we made our reservation we hope to see and harvest an Aoudad or two and some Javalina. Not only did we harvest two tremendous Aoudad and two nice Javalina, we saw Mule Deer, Elk, Coyotes, Rattlesnakes, Tarantula Spiders and Scorpions. It simply does not get any better than that!
The Guide:Levi Lashley was excellent. I can’t say enough good things about him. He was not only prepared with the right hunting equipment (Binoculars, Spotting Scope, Shooting Sticks, Side-By-Side Can-Am, Tire Plugs, etc) he was extremely knowledgeable regarding the Game Animals and Ranch property. His knowledge of the plant life was amazing. I asked a lot of questions and he was able to answer each of them. We felt very comfortable hunting with him. Firearm safety is something we take very seriously and it was great to hunt with someone of a similar mindset. Levi monitored our firearms, and our handling of the firearms, and ensured they were only loaded when appropriate. In fact, we did not even chamber any rounds until we were ready to take a shot.
The Ranch:The Ranch is an amazing place. 75,000 acres of various unbelievable rugged terrain. Mountains, canyons, cliffs, draws, rocks of all shapes and sizes and flat lands. There was nothing to dislike about this country. We not only had an opportunity to experience the wildlife and plant life but had an opportunity to meet some of the Ranch Crew at the main corral. On day one and day two we arrived at the corral at day break and one of the Crew members, Matt, was cooking a Mexican breakfast and coffee over an open fire. He graciously asked us to join him and the other Crew members. Of course we couldn’t refuse. The food , coffee and conversation was priceless and added to the overall atmosphere.
The bottom line is the hunt my son and I had was an overall experience of a lifetime and we made memories that will last forever. Thank you for making this happen. We have already booked for next year. Sincerely, Rick D. Winter
